Almost every professional position I’ve held has involved managing the internal communication function. One way to engage employees is through newsletters. I find them to be extraordinarily effective when executed appropriately.
Here’s my experience with internal newsletters:
- 2002-2004 – Frontier Behavioral Health. I gathered content, wrote articles, took pictures, designed, and published a print employee newsletter every month. The newsletter was distributed to donors and partner organizations for a total readership of approximately 600 each month. The newsletter was very well received, with employees eager to submit content. This newsletter was designed using Microsoft Publisher. Download sample.
- 2005-2006 – Bank of America. The bank was organized into market areas by state. I worked for the market president of the state of Nevada. There were approximately 2,500 employees. I managed the monthly newsletter, distributed as a PDF via e-mail. It was used as a best practice nationwide to implement it across the other 42 markets. This newsletter was designed with Microsoft Publisher. Download sample.
- 2009-2019 – UNLV Alumni Association. Throughout these 10 years, I published an internal newsletter several times a year. This newsletter was distributed by e-mail and archived on the website. This newsletter was designed with HTML.
- 2021-present – Current Employer. I write, design, and publish monthly newsletters reaching 150+ employees. The organization had a newsletter previously, but it was generally low quality and short in length. We increase the newsletter to up to 12 pages at times and much more profound quality. This newsletter was designed with Canva. Sample available upon request.
Internal communication is a function that comes natural to me. I’m excellent at writing leadership communications, as I now have more than 20 years of experience. The design portion of the newsletter has been an area where I could have benefited from formal training and additional resources.
